Playing for Change: STAND BY ME

I was feeling down a bit because as we speak, Rakim whom I've never seen live is on stage at The Knitting Factory and my ticket is being wasted because I'm wiped out - but this shit made me feel much better.

PLEASE watch and visit the website below

From the award-winning documentary, "Playing For Change: Peace Through Music", comes the first of many "songs around the world" being released independently. Featured is a cover of the Ben E. King classic by musicians around the world adding their part to the song as it travelled the globe. This and other songs such as "One Love" will be released as digital downloads soon; followed by the film soundtrack and DVD early next year.

R.I.P

New X-Mas Mix! (a.k.a "Ummmm, what happened to your blog"?

Hi. Remember us?

I wouldn't either if I were you.

Sorry for the 3 months of no update - life kind of took over.

And as a by-product of this occurrence, Elsewhere benefits as we will SOON see Elsewhere hitting New York City.

Actually, it has already as there was a little Elsewhere DJ showcase at APT last week (a club that hosts residencies with DJ Premier, Bobbito, Spinna, Prince Paul, Rich Medina, A.Vee, 3D, Eclipse & more).

The result. AMAZING feedback from clubbers and staff and some big news soon to be announced (pull out your calculator and add it up, Einstein!)

Anyways, in the meantime, here's a fun Elsewhere X-Mas mix.

KARDINAL In Stores Now!

Go BUY the album.
Proof that hard work and determination pays off.
Kardi has been grindin' non-stop since 1996 and has had to deal with bad luck, a record label folding and other fuckery, but he always managed to stay relevant and talked about.
Busta gives Kardi his props:

Here's perhaps my favourite tune off the album:

COMMON / N*E*R*D Afterparty

The Elsewhere crew throws down once again this Wed, this time with Common's DJ Dummy at the Common / N*E*R*D apresparty.

Estelle at Elsewhere

The lovely Estelle was kind enough to come hang with the Elsewhere fam last Sunday and took pix with loyal Elsewhere supporters like Jose Bodega:

Beres Hammond in the T.Dot

Sooooo, I was at the Beres Hammond show last Friday in Toronto - but missed Beres!

He's one of my all-time fave singers.

But I did see an opener named Melanie Fiona who I will definitely be talking about in the future.

I also missed Shuffle with Keys n'Krates, DITC, The Beatnuts, Dilated, Large Professor & more ... but all for very good reasons so I ain't mad.

Kinda makes me wanna move back home when I see all the choices in entertainment they have out there.

Here's someone else's Youtube footage of the Beres show:

And my all time fave Beres tune (footage from a previous Toronto show):

Big TIme Out: DE LA SOUL, K'NAAN, MAT THE ALIEN in Cumberland, BC

The Ferry:

It's bloody Mat The Alien; one of Canada's (and the U.K's) finest:

Sol Guy (www.4real.com) & K'naan:

The infamous Moustache Kid:

Shit was bananas, son!

And now for pix of the totally bitchin' afterparty:

Small town white folk know how to do it up - it really was a fun cross-cultural experience! It was like that highschool party scene in "Almost Famous", 'cept, i'm not famous.

Though I really appreciated the dozen of them who praised me for a great show ("um, I'm not in De La Soul, Becky")

In Richard Attenborough narrative nature program voice:

"Here they are in their element, trying to engage the foreign tribe into a competitive game where the loser must imbibe alcohol in vast amounts; but on this day, the foreign tribe would not be lured":

Some odd breathing exercise:

After the show it's the afterparty, after the party its the dutty lawn:

Like...one time, I totally went to this rave in Princeton, BC, and instead of a DJ, there was like, this BAND playing...and they weren't even playing electronica... and it's a rave!.....they wouldnt give me a refund.
The bandleaders name was Roy Ayers.

Happy Birfday, Ivana Santilli

Yup, we're slave drivers.

We forced the lovely & talented Ivana play a D.J. set at Elsewhere on her B-Day, far from her friends & fam in Toronto.

We felt bad so we gave her some chocolate cake and made the club sing "Happy Birthday".

She then sang "Let The Music Play" along with the club, old-school styles through headphones because the mic went missing.

A cop rolled up to the D.J booth and things got tense for about 3 seconds, til we realized, he just wanted to meet her.

The party was rammed and pretty memorable.

Shouts to Dr. J for tech support & photos.

Go get Ivana's new album.

ROCK THE BELLS - Miami

My past 4 weekends went...

1)
Stevie Wonder & I got to DJ with my boy Vinroc

2)
Akon, Wyclef, Sean Paul, Kardinal, & it was surprisingly one of the livest stadium shows I've ever experienced.
Akon & Clef turned it into a Soca jam, and energy as felt like that is rare to Vancouver.
I was always a huge fan of Clef / Fugees shows, but Akon really impressed me with his Clef-infuenced show.
I'm now a fan.

3)
Pemberton Fest where I got to play the B-Live tent with Shadow, Cut Chemist, Dopey, Hedspin and Mat The Alien, some of my favourite DJ's in the world;
Plus got to kick it with The Sean Carter Administration & N*E*R*D once again and politic with some of my bidness heroes.

4)
Rock The Bells in Miami with Tribe, Nas, Red, Meth, Rae, Ghost, De La, DPG'z, Mos Def, Pharcyde, Jay Electronica, N.O.R.E, Dres & more.
Then returned home and DJ'ed with Ivana Santilli at her Vancity B-Day party, then with my boy Shortkut (The Beat Junkies), then with Ayres from The Rub and Ali B from Fabric UK.

Bragging?
Maybe a little.
But really, hard work pays off.
I feel blessed. I am blessed

Work hard, say your prayers and eat your vitamins, kiddies.
Tomorrow's sermon:
Is the pain from jolting the funny bone in your elbow the work of the devil? Tune in.

Shouts:
Ramos (& his abused duck), Celine (best Stan-ographer everrrr), Junior & Alex (who liked my mix CD's so much that they buried them in the dirt), Smiles, Maseo & the fam, Pos & Dave, Ali Shaheed & Tribe, Schmooche & The Pharcyde, Monica, Chang, Josh, Mihai, Michie V, Bernbiz, Plex, Wreckognize, Andrea, Daai Lo, Cuban Food and everyone else I'm forgetting now that I have Cuban food on my mind. MIAMI SPICE

So this was my 3rd trip to Miami, the first non WMC / M3-related trip

...and I still have yet to set foot on Miami beach sand!

Also in the area were fellow Canucks Jon Ramos (R.E.M.G, former Director of A&R at Sony-BMG), Celine Wong (MuchMusic), and Muziklee Inzane & Alex (The Real Frequency; Flow 93, Toronto).

The Food:

When in Miami, I highly recommend:

Beach BBQ (Washington & 16th)

Quality of the brisket is amazing - melts in your mouth - plus they have this CRAZY sweet potato & banana mash that's more like a dessert than a side dish

Playa Cafe (Washington & 15th)

Nothing fancy, just a family-run cuban joint with good home-cooked food for suprisingly cheap for being in Sobe.

Calamari that looks more like pork than squid: Pepper Steak:

Versailles (Little Havana, also various locations in L.A)
My food wasnt as tasty as at the ones in L.A, but thinking it was just an off-moment. Try the Garlic Chicken:

Random Cuban Deli:

Kicks:

I've been out the shoe game for a bit, but the temptation was definitely there esp. at ATC. Luckily, I stopped at 1 purrrrr.
__

Air Traffic Control (16th between Collins & Washington)

New Spot opened up by DJ Daai Lo, formerly of Rawkus Records

Perhaps the ILLEST selection of Dunks, AJ's & AF1's I've ever seen - many pieces are 6+ years old and/or from overseas.

One of the reasons being, they have a bunch of DJ Homocide's (Sugar Ray) shoes there on consignment.

If you're in the shoe game, you likely know that Homocide has one of the craziest collections in the world.

___

Shoe Gallery (244 NE 1st Ave, Downtown)

This is where celebs go to shop for kicks a la Sportie L.A.

Selection is definitely worth the cabride

Kid Robot:

RanDumb pix:

Of course, we'd run into DJ Khaled:

Raekwon & Redman had a party at Mansion (Supernat was also in the house):

JAY Z - PHARRELL - DOPEY & More at Pemberton Fest

Big weekend on so many levels.

OK. Traffic was nuts. And my set got moved. Twice. And I had to play on a mixer I'm not used to. And I had to shorten my set to work with the sched.

But I got over that shit in about 12 seconds because this festival was one of the best things to happen to B.C everrrrrrr.

Grateful I was able to be a part.
Everyone, please go buy Coldplay's new album because this thing would not have happened without Chris Martin & crew, who worked in tandem with Live Nation to make this possible.
Chris personally asked Jay to come through. Not that many people have that kinda clout.
(FYI - It was Jay's first B.C show in 10 years)
I'll post vid when I get some free time. In the meantime, peep my pix:

Marbles in your mouth

BIG tune!

But what the funk is he saying?

In the tradition of Jimi Hendrix & Bob Dylan singing "S'cuse me as I Kiss The Sky" being misheard as "S'cuse me as I Kiss This Guy", we bring you the Wonder Years theme song by Joe Cocker - live at Woodstock:

New Podcast + I Love NY + Meet Shortee Blitz

There's a WHOLE lotta annoying name dropping & yapping about my wonderful musical experiences in this entry; my apologies.

This week's podcast guest is our fam from London, UK; Shortee Blitz. He's an incredibly skilled award-winning DJ on radio at Kiss100.
The first time I ever heard of this cat was when Maseo from De La Soul shouted him out on the mic at this amazing festival I was at in London in 2001.
My dumbass thought Mase was shouting out Shortie No Mas, the girl on Buhloone Mind State. Little did I know that Shortee & his boy Ty were actually once signed to Mase's label.

Later in life I saw him tear up the UK B-boy Championships & a crazy Redman show in the UK where Erick Sermon & Saukrates played Red's Hypemen, and incidentally, Maseo ended up M.C.íng for Shortee that same night and I think that may have been when Mase gave birth to that demented laugh of his as heard on Gorillaz "Feel Good Inc."

Fast forward a few years...

Myself & J-Swing are in NYC in the Lobby of Universal waiting for Kirk Harding at SRC Records (Incidentally, it was Kirk who first told Kardinal about this new singer named Akon about to drop on SRC.. and look at them now!!!)

Anyways, I wasnt paying attention to the other people in the lobby and Kirk comes down to grab us and another pair of people in the lobby.
He introduces us to the other people and its Shortee Blitz and his wife and I blurt out........... "Yooooooooooooooooooooo..... I'm a big fan!" (I dont praise people like that too often)

Meanwhile J-Swing is wondering... "a fan? who is this cat?"
and Shortee's thinking.... "How the fuck would anyone not from the UK even know about me?"

Anyhoo, we all kick it while Steve Rifkind is adjacent to us getting his grind on re-signing Wu-Tang or something

And at this time, the entire city is buzzing because 3 nights before is when R.Kelly got peppersprayed at Madison Square Garden and kicked off the Jay Z tour.

That night same Friday of that show, me, J-Swing the whole NYC were glued to the radio listening to Jay Z telling Angie Martinez why R.Kelly is a punk.

That was night 1 of 5 Sold Out NY area shows.

On night 2, I had to be at this Halloween party while J-Swing rolled solo to Madison Square Garden to see an R.Kellyless Jay Z.

After the show, J-Swing rolls in seriously buzzing high off music telling me what he witnessed which was a monumental night of Jay Z bringing out a whole lotta guests to fill for the molester and I was kicking myself for having to work that night.

Anyways, back to that Monday at the Universal office:

We tell Shortee that we're gonna go see night 4 of the Jay Z / un-R.Kelly run and we invite Shortee & Wifey to roll.

Wait, lemme get into another couple tangents so you see why I LOVE NYC because there's a million people to politic with and 48 hours of action to fit into each 24 hour period ....

Earlier that day me and some other cats I was working with at the time had lunch with Mark Ronson & Rhymefest.

Rhymefest was telling us how the night before at the Jay Z show in Jersey (3rd of 5 area shows) that Dame Dash & Kanye were arguing and Dame was shouting to Kanye: "You ain't Roc-A-Fella" (How incredible is that in hindsight with where things are at today?)

I'm not even done name dropping & story telling

So later in the day after meetings and all that jazz, I went to link up with Del The Funky Homosapien, Zion I, Bukue & Abstract Rude at their Calicomm show in Time Square (this is only 2/3 into my full day)

So J-Swing, Shortee & his wife Jacqui meet me at THAT show, and we head to MSG to see the BIG show

Seeing Jay at the Garden is like a religious experience.
I know that phrase is overused, but the energy was unlike anything i've experienced.
EVERYONE was swaying their Roc sign throw ups in unison to P.S.A and this crowd would have lynched Nas or drank the special Kool Aid if Jay asked.
I think I would have too.

Anyways, this is who Jay got to replace R.Kelly, in order I believe, with Jay hits sprinkled between - ALL with the element of surprise (ever seen the Royal Rumble? Was like that!):

Busta Rhymes
Q-Tip
(they did "Scenario" which was a huge moment me)
Raekwon (with Q & Busta playing his hypeman!!!)
Ja Rule (who i'm not a fan of, but when he did his verse on "New York", I couldnt help but enjoy that moment)
Freeway
Beenie Sigel

Memphis Bleek
Young Gunz
T.I.
Mary J Blige
(Mary did her own 20 minute set after the Jay collabos; and when she did "I'm Going Down", the females in the audience drowned out her vocals)
Foxy Brown
Puffy (Who did a set of Bad Boy hits)
Black Rob (hearing "Whoah" live in NYC is some serious shit!)
Fabulous
Kanye West
(who did a set of his own)
Slick Rick (!)
Doug E Fresh (!)
Pharrell
Snoop Dogg
Then Jay closed with "Big Pimpin"

Anyways, thats my long-ass story on how we met & bonded with Shortee and why NYC is the sheeeeeeeeit

Elsewhere Bornday: ?uestlove & Flipout

This night at
Elsewhere was legendary for real!

It was our first ever Elsewhere and we got that guy from
The Roots with the afro to pass through.

This was like a month after James Brown had passed and out of the blue ?uest says..."I'ma do a James Brown tribute"

Not expected at all, but not at all un-welcomed.

At soundcheck, Marlon J. English schooled Ahmir on how to use Serato loops and Ahmir was like a little kid who just discovered the cheat code to Grand Theft Auto.

Ahmir proceeded to absolutely destroy the turntables with 3 hours of James Brown orginals, songs that sample James, and remakes - A set no one had ever heard.

Flip M.C.'ed for him as you can see.

The next day Ahmir played us some unreleased Dilla beats which we'll play for you at an upcoming night at Elsewhere.

The Roti debate

When I first moved out here, the idea of Pizza shops selling Souvlaki and Greek spots serving Pizza seemed kinda odd to me.

Italian Souvlaki? Hmmmmmm

In that same realm, is the Roti/Jerk debate

Personally, I prefer not to eat Jerk Chicken unless it's made by a Yardee,

And I don't mess with Roti not made by Trini's.

And it has nothing to do with me being Trini - take both the Jerk & Roti taste test some time to see what I mean.

Sprangalang weighs in on the debate:

Kanye & Flipout discuss the world's energy crisis

A while back, the Elsewhere crew hung out with that famous guy from Chicago.

He was hella tipsy so Flipout started rolling the tape in case there arose the opportunity to blackmail him for some drunken comments.

We baited him, trying to get him to talk bigot shit about people with eczema or people from Abbotsford or poor people who make less than $3,000,000 a year, but being the media saavy mofu that Kanye is, he wouldn't allow himself to get sucked in.

Instead, he got all political.

Background vocals by A-Trak

Duet: Mike Tyson & Bobby Brown

Please keep your Daughters away from these two gentlemen.

Meet The Elsewhere D.J. - Part 2 - FLIPOUT

.
FLIPOUT
.
Don't let his job at the Top 40 Radio Station fool you, Flipout is a very educated genre-blind musical connoisseur and B-Boy for life having battled and won many local M.C, D.J, & B-Boy competitions,
.
plus he's toured with KRS-One and The Liks and has served as DJ for among others; Raekwon (Wu-Tang) and Talib Kweli.
.
And you thought you knew him, huh?
.
Did we mention that his all hip-hop mixshow with J-Swing was named "Best Mixshow in Canada" 2 years in a row by the entire Canadian Urban Music Industry?
.
Everyone from Ghostface to Kanye has love for Straight Goods radio.
.
In fact, The Godfather of Hip-hop, Afrika Bambaataa once reached out to Flip out of the blue to give him his props.

Still clueless?
